Main header bit Jackson/that upward with that one is?

The funny thing about me writing up this piece is that the actual source that got me looking into this says the exact opposite of what I believe to be the truth. When Guillermo del Toro left "The Hobbit" over the weekend, the initial thought that ran through my mind is: "We're going to get a shitty Hobbit."Why?For one - Warner Bros and New Zealand as a film industry hub need "The Hobbit" to happen as planned. It was always the opinion of this skinny, under-educated writer that the only thing keeping Warner Bros from dumping Joe Q Profitable in as director was Del Toro and Peter Jackson's hold on the project.Half that hold left to persue other things, and the expectation would be that Peter Jackson would step in, right? So says The Dominion Post when talking to Jackson himself:"If that's what I have to do to protect Warner Bros' investment, then obviously that's one angle which I'll explore," he ! said. But stepping in as director would be difficult as he had signed writer and director contracts with Hollywood studios for two other films, with one likely to begin next year. "The other studios may not let me out of the contracts."In other words...ahem..."Tin Tin." There are those two motion capture movies and a horror project Jackson has vaguely talked about in the past. Honestly, the horror project could be pushed out of the way, it's "Tin Tin" that's the juggernaut. As I write, my Twitter feed is echoing back that Jackson's representation had the exact same reaction as I did: "No way is he directing The Hobbit on the current schedule." I'm paraphrasing thier thought process there, that's not a quote. The huge amount of money being tossed around here and the huge amount of money this project will likely bring in have become the motivating factors, and what little momentum "The Hobbit" has managed to gain has been expensive momentum. The films exist teetering on an expa! nsive precipice. On one side is the blackness of lost money, o! r what w ill happen if someone decides to bankroll the wait for the correct talent (it'll be a long wait, because Del Toro doesn't bail on pictures that are ready to go). On the other side, a downward slope of mediocrity. The question: "How good can a Tolkien movie be if the development is separated from the director?" We're stuck between the Development Hell of the next Superman movie and a redux of "X3: The Last Stand."Both of those choices suck. The only hope for Tolkien, once again, is Peter Jackson. The man needs to find a wunderkind and right quick or doom us to a sub-par "Hobbit."Source: The Dominion Post
