Emily Mortimer and Michael flesh saved connects `the Hugo Cabret off Martin Scorsese

The cast of Martin Scorsese’s Hugo Cabret keeps getting better and better. I had a little moment of excitement a week or so ago when it looked like Mathieu Amalric was in the cast, only to find that was an early casting deal that fell apart.

But now there’s news that might be just as good. Emily Mortimer has joined the cast, as has Michael Stuhlbarg, who was so good in his debut feature A Serious Man, by Joel and Ethan Coen. The film has been shooting for a couple weeks, and THR says that Mortimer and Stuhlbarg have joined the cast in supporting roles. According to the trade, “Mortimer plays the station’s flower shop girl, Lisette, and Stuhlbarg plays Rene Tabard, a film restorer.” So, probably not particularly large roles, but I’ll take what I can get.

Mortimer just worked with Martin Scorsese, as she had a small but relatively important role in Shutter Island.

Stuhlbarg has also recently worked with Scorsese, as he has a role in Boardwalk Empire, the pilot the director recently completed for HBO. Wait, what? How did he sneak in there? I think Stuhlbarg’s appearance in the show was announced relatively late, and I missed it. So this is like two casting gifts in one. (In Boardwalk Empire, the actor will be gangster Arnold Rothstein, with whom Steve Buscemi’s lead character Nucky does booze business.)

To recap, here’s the film’s synopsis once more:

Hugo Cabret, Scorsese’s first film shot in 3D, tells the tale of an orphan boy (Asa Butterfield) living a secret life in the walls of a Paris train station. When Hugo encounters a broken machine, an eccentric girl (Chloë Moretz), and the cold, reserved man who runs the toy shop (Ben Kingsley), he is caught up in a magical, mysterious adventure that could put all of his secrets in jeopardy. Also appearing in the all-star cast are Jude Law, Ray Winstone, Christopher Lee, Helen McCrory, Frances de la Tour, and Richard Griffiths.
