MGM is negotiating with Brazilian director Jose Padilha to helm the reboot of “Robocop.”

The original “Robocop” film was directed by Paul Verhoeven and starred Peter Weller in 1987. The story followed a cyborg cop killing and arresting criminals in the crime-ridden city of Detroit.

Padilha directed “Elite Squad” and “Elite Squad 2: The Enemy Within.” The sequel earned over $60 million in Brazil last year.

Previously, the “Robocop” reboot had director Darren Aronofsky attached to the project until MGM halted all film productions due to bankruptcy. Aronofsky ended up taking on Twentieth Century Fox’s “Wolverine” sequel.
