Andy Serkis has been “there and back again.”

According to Deadline, Serkis has officially signed on to play Gollum in “The Hobbit,” the two-part film currently under production by Peter Jackson.

Serkis will join returning “Lord of the Rings” cast members, including Cate Blanchett and Elijah Wood.

According to Deadline’s unnamed sources, other “Lord of the Rings” cast members under negotiations also include Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee and Ian Holm.

In the J.R.R. Tokien’s “The Hobbit” book, Gollum first appeared when Bilbo Baggins stumbled upon his lair and found the Ring which Gollum had lost in the network of caves leading to the lake.

The first part of “The Hobbit” is expected to be in theaters next year on December 19.
