View early one âthe children in America â

Looks like there was a secret test screening NYC for Michael Dowse's "Kids in America." LatinoReview reader 'Turk 182' went to the screening and sent us his thoughts on the film."Kids in America" stars Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler, Teresa Palmer, Michael Ian Black, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Michael Biehn. The film follows an aimless college grad who pursues his dream girl at a wild Labor Day weekend party. He, his twin sister and their best friend struggle with their burgeoning adulthood over the course of the night. Here’s what 'Turk 182' has to say about the film.My girlfriend snagged tickets to an advance screening of Topher Grace's new film, one that I honestly can't say I had even heard of. Grace is an actor I always felt should have a bigger career since the end of “That 70's Show” and while I'm not saying that this film is good enough to make him a megastar he's a p! erfect fit for “Kids In America”. Or is it “Take Me Home Tonight?” You see, my girl and I were under the impression that was the name of the film because it appeared on the invite. It wasn't until Grace himself turned up to introduce the movie that we learned “Kids In America” is in fact the actual title. After doing a search for this film online I discovered that its actually been on the shelf for quite some time. Grace not only conceived and co-wrote the picture, but he did so with several writers from “That 70's Show” and the film's director Michael Dowse.Set in the late eighties, Grace plays a recent grad from MIT who is completely unsure of what to do with his life and is biding his time by working at Suncoast Video. That doesn't sit too well with his cop dad Michael Biehn who spent half his earnings to put the kid through school and expects him to start planning his future. Grace's twin sister, played by Anna Faris is about to move in with her boyfrien! d and is awaiting word on whether her application to Cambridge! has bee n accepted. He soon takes the initiative, but not in the manner his dad suggests, when High School crush Teresa Palmer walks into the store, ultimately impressing her with where he works. Except Palmer thinks that Grace works at Goldman Sachs not Suncoast Video. It's just a little white lie, but we know it won't stay little for long. kids_in_america_topher_and_palmer When Palmer suggests that they meet up at the big party happening that night, Grace realizes he needs to show up in an expensive car. That's where his heavy drinking insecure buddy Dan Fogler comes in. Fired from his job as a car salesman that morning, Fogler gets Grace in on a little B & E action and they make off with a brand new red convertible. Fogler is such a loser that it's a wonder Grace hangs out with him, but the bag of coke they find in the convertible's glove box will be the key to his next series of misadventures throughout the night. And what a long night it will be.Once Grace meets up with Palmer at the party he nearly blows it with her in a hilarious situation involving the Heimlich maneuver. But when he awkwardly confesses she was his High School crush, Palmer starts to look at him in a new light. She's impressed that he can be a banker and still maintain some bit of normalcy in his life. Palmer's girlfriends on the other hand are only impressed by Fogle! r because he's carrying a bag of coke and soon the gang is rolling to another party in Beverly Hills. It is there that Grace is put on the spot by Palmer's boss who inquires what exactly does he do at Goldman Sachs, who by the way, don't have an office in L.A. Luckily for Grace, his skills with math make him look like a number crunching shark and a real stud in Palmer's eyes as he spews meaningless technical jargon that sounds like typical banker's speak. Meanwhile Fogler gets into a tight situation of his own when mysterious siren Angie Everhart asks if they can party alone with his little bag of coke in the bathroom After getting loosened up, he can't believe she wants to seduce him but there's a catch. In what will definitely become the film's most talked about scene, Everhart tries to have aggressive sex with Fogler on the bathroom floor while her male companion watches. Fogler does his best to get into it (the coke only fuels his paranoia), but her male companion is a ! gray haired man in a tight leather outfit who looks like an ol! d fat Ma rlon Brando.Though I was in the mood for a sex comedy I'm surprised to say what I enjoyed most about “Kids In America” was the budding romance between Grace and Palmer whom I found out later became an item during the making of this film. Her big eighties hair makes her look like a spoiled debutante, but she's actually a decent girl who is unhappy with her new job and is just as scared of facing the real world as Grace is. There's a really great scene where they have a conversation about whether or not she would have gone out with him if he asked during their High School years and her answer is an honest one. You can see she really likes him because he's honest, but then there's that matter of the little white lie looming over his head. kids_in_america_topher_and_fogler I didn't forget to talk about Anna Faris, it's just that she's more of a supporting player in this film. She's worried about how her boyfriend will react if she gets into Cambridge and when its revealed he's played by Chris Pratt you can fully understand her dilemma. Pratt and Faris actually met and got married because of this film and he's excelled at playing obnoxious idiots in movies like “Wanted” and “Everwood” on television. His main concern is throwing a great keg party and finally moving into a place of his own with his girlfriend. Even though her brother Grace points out the guy is no good for her, she refuses to see it.I was actually born in the eighties, but am very familiar with many of the songs on the soundtrack. (A good deal of them are on my iPod.) It must have been very expensive to license all these great songs which makes me wonder why a decent film like this has been sitting on the shelf for a few years? “Kids In America” could be the breakout ! film Grace needs even though its geared to be an eighties sex comedy. I couldn't get enough of Dan Fogler who also shines in this film and when it finally does get released I hope to see it again. If you use this review call me “Turk 182!”Source: Turk 182
