That of lake talk - results 2 December 2010 off the combat off MINE night

Seeing Red

A great final fight night for 2010 Seeing Red was the last amateur mma fight night of the year for Vancouver’s local fight scene. With the explosive growth of mma, new fight series appearing and the sanctioning of pro events, not to mention UFC’s first visit to Vancouver, 2010 will be remembered as the best year ever for the fight scene in Vancouver, with a brighter future ahead in 2011. The fight card for Seeing Red brought back many of the better local amateur fighters who have been seen on fight cards earlier in the year, with local fighters like Murray Sogen, David de Jesus, Cheryl Chan, Ronald Diaz and Olivier Vajada on the under card, featuring Nick Marinos and Shaun Devries as the Main Event for an amateur welterweight title.

Walter Barrios from Diverse Extreme Centre, a new club in Kamloops fought Ryan Ince from Fight Pit in Maple Ridge in a bantamweight fight to kick the night off. Barrios showed up as a very persistent fighter and got in an arm bar after a few attempts at different locks, at about 1:30 of round 1.

Lightweights Russ McCumber Comox Valley Courtney and Andrew Small Revolution Langley had a fast mma fight with a fast ending, with Andrew Small getting in a triangle leg choke after a minute. McCumber did however get strikes in before it was finished on the ground against the cage.

David de Jesus showed as an exciting fighter at IFC 9 in October of this year. But then again if you had KOTC winner Ryan ‘The Lion’ Diaz in your corner, so would you. He was matched up with Nick Kitchen from Impact MMA Nanaimo for a welterweight fight. David took a bit of a ground beating in round 1, managed in jiu-jitsu survival mode for some of it and managed to get back to his feet with crowd applause. Then at 28 seconds of round two, de Jesus strikes with a single round kick to the head and down goes Nick Kitchen out cold. De Jesus celebrated with a capoeira dance.

A bantamweight fight between James Pratt from Comox Valley MMA and Abdul Majid from Columbia Martial arts in Burnaby was the first fight to go 3 full rounds to a judges decision. Majid presented Pratt with an unorthodox standup guard with open hands through the fight. While on the ground Majid demonstrated great flexibility and had a good ground fight, but in round 3 Pratt was getting side control and guard, and took it despite Majid’s attempts to wake up his boxing. Pratt would get the unanimous judges decision.

Emilio Ditrocchio of Poseners MMA Vancouver and Aaron Chin of Revolution Langley were paired up for a lightweight match. Ditroccio broke Chin’s nose early on with lots of accompanying blood. After a review by the cage doctor and a reset, the fight was stopped at 2:09, awarding the win to Ditrocchio.

A featherweight matchup between Ronald Diaz from DCS Port Moody and Olivier Vajada Carlson Gracie MMA Maple Ridge would pit a standup guy against a ground guy that went to the judges after 3 rounds. Vajada would get it unanimously from the judges due in part to good technical takedowns and kept trying to minimise kicking and striking from Diaz, though he did get in a few.

Second fighter from the new Kamloops club, Alex Houston was set up with Murray Sogen Elite MA Academy North Vancouver for a lightweight MMA match. It is worth noting that Sogen fought Nick Marinos at IFC 9 in October on for the main event of that night. Marinos won that battle but not before Sogen made it as absolutely as difficult as possible for Marinos to beat him, a feat acknowledged by Marinos after the fight, saying Sogen was the most difficult guys he ever fought. In this nights matchup against Alex Houston, Sogen won by triangle choke before the end of round two.

The one heavyweight mma matchup at Seeing Red was between Jimmy Foster from Team Badboy Outreach in Surrey and Robert “Moose” Palmer from World Class Martial Arts also in Surrey. In a pitched hard hitting standup battle, Foster had to continue on without a mouthguard for a stretch, a fact that did not help him out. The fight was ended by the cage doctor after a stop in action was called for the mouthguard. No takedowns in this match.

There was one Muay Thai match in the cage between heavyweight fighters Jonas Kwiakowski from Posener’s and Richard Evanochko from Revolution Langley. Two big guys â€" both at 230 lbs, hard strikers, had a short hard and sweet fight. Kwiakowski would win at 1:55 TKO in the first round, after he opened up a cut on Evanochko’s right eye, and after a couple exchanges he got a standing 8 count. The fight was called after one more heavy exchange.

Two flyweight ladies were set up for a special bout, Stephanie Eggink from West Coast Fight Club Bellingham WA and Cheryl Chan from Mendoza Fight Team in Surrey who impressively beat Sarah McLeod earlier this year at one of the previous Westcoast promotions fight nights. Stephanie Eggink proved to be a tough customer for Chan, being strong and persistent with mounts and beatings on Chan in the first two rounds. They came out for a third, at about 34 seconds in Eggink got deep past Chan’s guard and hammered and pounded until stoppage.

In the Co-Main Event, The second fighter from the new Kamloops club, Mike Dupont, was in a light heavyweight mma match with Derik Mark Canada’s Best Karate in Victoria. Derik Mark was at Summer Slugfest in Victoria in August against Nigel Yargua. While Yargua won the match, Mark held up against Yargua’s beatings and cranks, and the crowed honoured Mark with a standing ovation afterwards. Mark would get this victory against Dupont in a split decision.

The Main Event for the card was the battle set up between Shaun Devries from Comox Valley MMA and “Tricky” Nick Marinos for a welterweight belt. In a fight that was decided very quickly, Tricky got a front guillotine early in the first round and that was it. I asked Tricky afterwards how did he get it in, and he said that he used the rolling momentum he had from Devries to get the guillotine in tight. He then knew he had it in and he then knew he had to hold it in for at least seven seconds.
