Magazines off the combat off IFC 9 night

My fight blog was on hand for the IFC 9 fight night at the Pinnacle Hotel in North Vancouver. If you have ever wondered about the local fight scene in Vancouver, its getting better and better with every event. Local fight fans figured that out already and they packed the Pinnacle for 12 exciting amateur fights, featuring MMA, Muay Thai, and Kickboxing forms.

Matt Furness vs Kiefer Harrison

Matt Furness vs Kiefer Harrison

Matt Furness of Carlson Gracie and Kiefer Harrison of Team Havok got the night started off with a 160lb kickboxing match. Mat Furness would get a unanimous judges win, (29-28, 29-28, 30-27). Fighters served up big uppercuts and Harrison challenged Furness with inside battles.

Jesse Morassky vs Russ McCumber

Kurtis Waterston vs Jay Hsiung

The first Muay Thai fight would be for the 140lb weight division and feature Kurtis Waterston of Carlson Gracie against Jay Hsuing of Universal MMA. In this exciting matchup, Waterston would dominate the fight and profit from a knockdown against Hsuing in the first round. Waterston would go on to win each round, but Jay Hsuing was never that far behind his opponent.

Navid Mirzais vs Shawn Hunt

A 180lbs Kickboxing fight next featured Navid Mirzais from B-One in North Vancouver against Shawn Hunt of Team Havok Kelowna. Judges scored it at (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) for Hunt.

Kevin Madrid vs Ronald Diaz

Kevin Madrid vs Ronald Diaz

Kevin Madrid of Mendoza Fight Team in Surrey was paired up against Ronald Diaz of DCS Port Moody for a 145lb MMA fight. One of he rules in MMA is that a fighter can not strike an opponent while they are in the process of getting to their feet. Training for opportunity and fast reaction means that it happens sometimes that a fighter will still strike in that case. The fight was stopped for an illegal hit to the head of a downed opponent by Ronald Diaz at 3:59 of the first round. I saw Madrid saying to Referee Jason Williamson, but the doctor also called the fight and it was over my disqualification.

Dustin Greentree vs Paul Lee

In a middleweight MMA matchup between Dustin Greentree of Kamikaze Punishment in Edmonton and Paul Lee of Team Havok Kelowna, Greentree would win by a 1st round knockout, fighting and chasing Lee around the ropes until 3:07. Lee took a hit that flattened him out cold on the mat.

Jared Abrahamson vs Justin Virk

The action would then switch back to a Muay Thai fight for two 147lbs fighters, Jared Abrahamson from Clinch 4 Life Burnaby, 5’11” in height, against independent fighter Justin Virk from Surrey standing 6’3” in height. Abrahamson would take the fight by judges unanimous decision, (30-28, 29-28, 29-28). He took Virk with several leg sweeps and Thai clinch knee battles, fought faster, showed a high degree of hustle, and kept pushing the fight to Virk until the end.

Clay Oates vs David De Jesus

A middleweight MMA fight was next between Clay Oates of Team Karma Outrage and David De Jesus from DCS Port Moody. In the corner with De Jesus was King of The Cage champ, Ryan The Lion Diaz. It would be a hard night to call the fight of the night on, but we could call it on this fight. David De Jesus is an exciting fighter to watch. De Jesus got the rear naked choke in deep the second time when he got Clay Oates on the ground at 2:40 round 1.

Logan Martin vs Shelbe Kingshott

The judges would call the fight Unanimously (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) for Martin after it was over.

Joe Halfar from Posener’s Muay Thai was back at IFC to go against Houtan Ali Koshani from KB-One North Vancouver in this 160lb matchup. Halfar is another great fighter to watch, as he owned the ring against Koshani. Halfar pushed Koshani on to and almost over the ropes repeatedly and generally owned the center of the ring. The judges gave Halfar the fight unanimously (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

“Tricky” Nick Marinos vs Murray Sogen

The main event of the night was a title welterweight matchup between MMA fighters Murray Sogen from Elite MMA North Vancouver and “Tricky” Nick Marinos of RAW Academy North Vancouver. Fighters and crowd were pumped for the final fight and it did not disappoint. Marinos and Sogen traded mounts and strikes througout the fight, and Marinos found himself on his back defending probably a lot more than he would have liked for a good result by the judges score card. Marinos finally got his chance to take control and mount and finish ground and pound style a minute into round 3, and force stoppage by referee. He would say afterwards that Murray Sogen was his most difficult opponent to date and saluted him openly. The crowd also respected Sogen’s efforts and cheered him loudly.
