Curtis Hanson bagged himself a gruff male lead, getting Gerard Butler into the starring tole in "Mavericks." Butler is set to play the role of Rick "Frosty" Hesson, a guy who taught surfing legend Jay Moriarty for a year.The film is based on the true story of Santa Cruz surf phenom Jay Moriarity and his quest to ride the treacherous Northern California breaks known as Mavericks, where winter swells create waves the size of five-story buildings.Curtis Hanson has a nice line of films he's directed under his belt, which include "8 Mile," "L.A. Confidential," "The Hand That Rock the Cradle" and his most recent one "Lucky You." He's currently in the middle of filming upcoming television movie "Too Big to Fail," chronicling the financial meltdown of '08.Source: Deadline
