âBattle: Los Angeles âblows far the crat competition off weekend

Among the three new films that were vying their way to the top of the box office chart for this weekend, only one reigned supreme. That picture happened to be the sci-fi action flick "Battle: Los Angeles," winning the weekend with an estimated $36 million. That's something that should surprise a few of you, considering the fact that "Battle: LA" has been for the most part critically panned. That must mean audiences were craving some end of the world movie goodness in comparison to some supernatural, semi-romantic films.Of course we're referring to the Catherine Hardwicke film "Red Riding Hood" which landed in third place, only bringing $14.1 million back to grandma's house. Then technically we can say that a chameleon beat out a wolf, because "Rango" dominated second place, taking in $23 million on it's second week in theaters. It's managed to make about $69 million domestically,! not bad given the fact that we're still practically in the dead months of film. "The Adjustment Bureau" continues to hold onto a slot in the top five, landing in fourth with $11.4 million. The biggest bomb of the weekend has to go to "Mars Needs Moms," only taking $6.8 back to the mother ship. With a whopping $150 million dollar budget slapped on it, the sci-fi family flick didn't catch on with audiences like it should've, and that could be largely due to "Rango."The last new film we should make note on is Cary Fukunaga's version of "Jane Eyre." The Focus Features romantic tale only opened up in limited theaters and made $182,000, but wishful thinking makes me say that hopefully they'll expand the release really soon.
